Why choose NMCS
NMCS Sailing School - RYA Sailing courses, Yachtmaster, Coastal Skipper & Day Skipper Theory
All
our study material is written and produced by us specifically for
correspondence tuition. Every term and technique is fully explained
as it is introduced, and every diagram is easy to understand. The
modules are designed in such a way that topics are introduced in a
logical manner, supported by worked examples and illustrations. Self-test
exercises throughout the modules ensure that a structured course develops.
The NMCS modules combine to form a complete course and subsequent
reference, and are supplemented where appropriate by RYA and Admiralty
charts and publications.

A
correspondence course is not just simply sending you some books, asking
you some questions and putting a tick or cross to your answers. Tuition
forms an essential part of the course because, irrespective of how
well the course has been prepared, there will always be a point that
isn’t completely understood or an example that needs further
explanation. The tutors will provide you with helpful comments,
advice and encouragement. You will also have access to tutors throughout
the duration of the course (either by phone, e-mail or letter)
whenever you need extra help or tuition.

With
any correspondence course there is a large amount of administration
which goes, or should go, largely unnoticed by the student. Modern
technology now means that communication is faster than ever, but it
is only of benefit if there are people present to respond to it equally
as quickly. There is little point in instant communication in a part-time
office manned by an answerphone. No matter how good the course or
the tuition, if you are waiting days or weeks for the return of your
work, or there is nobody to sort out your query, it detracts from
the enjoyment and the learning benefit.
Like
our tutors, NMCS administrative staff are full-time and experienced.
Although much of the work is done behind the scenes, the accurate
and efficient production of course material, the immediate response
to any administrative enquiry, we aim to return your work as soon as
possible to maintain the momentum of your course.

The
NMCS was established in 1970 specifically to encourage high standards
of safety, responsibility and competence and to provide skippers
and crews of small boats with the required knowledge for cruising
under sail or power.
The
first correspondence school to be accredited by the Royal Yachting
Association (RYA), we have been conducting courses both in the UK
and in more than 50 countries overseas for over 36 years, and we
remain the only school whose full-time resources are devoted solely
to teaching sailing by correspondence.

 |
This
experience means that we conduct more courses successfully
than any other correspondence school.
You
may be unsure as to what is involved in a correspondence course.
Later in the prospectus we outline the advantages of correspondence
tuition, explain how our courses work, describe the study
material and present the syllabus for each individual course.
But there are firstly three fundamental components essential
to any successful correspondence course.
